Don’t stress if you haven’t yet purchased your Mom something for Mother’s Day… you still have time! The annual holiday is fast approaching and on this coming Sunday, March 12 the NRF found that 86% of people will be celebrating the women who helped raise them. Their survey found that the top 3 gifts Moms can expect are greeting cards (75%), flowers (67%), and a special outing (55%) like brunch. No matter the gift, those celebrating cited “finding something unique” as the most important factor when picking out a present for their Moms, followed by giving a gift that “creates a special memory”.
With shoppers predicted to spend an average of $196 on their mothers this holiday (highest in history, up from $180 last year) retailers and brands alike are scurrying to get in on the action and a share of shopper’s wallets. Amazon has had their “Mother’s Day Gift Shop” live on their website for the past couple of weeks, complete with gift guides and their QVC-esk live stream featuring relatable women talking about their favorite gifts for Moms. Walmart hopes to garner the attention of last minute shoppers with their in-store “Mom Appreciation Event” the day before the holiday. There will be free tea and carrot cake samples along with flower giveaways. This is a smart move from the chain as more than 8 in 10 indicate they will look to retailers for gifting inspiration.
While most brands and retailers are going the traditional route of promoting smiling faces around a table celebrating mom and publishing heart-warming videos acknowledging the amazing impact mom has had on her family’s lives, Kraft Mac & Cheese is taking a more “honest” approach. The insight behind their Mother’s Day campaign is quite simple: being a mom is hard work; it’s stressful, it’s time-consuming and it comes with little “me time”. So, they’re encouraging Mom’s to take a less traditional approach this year on their day and hire a babysitter- on the company’s dime. “Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate Mom in all of her greatness, but we know the holiday doesn’t stop the challenges of motherhood — temper tantrums, sleepless nights and picky eaters,” said Sergio Eleuterio, head of marketing for Kraft in a recent press release. “With Kraft Mother’s Day Away, we are giving moms across the country the chance to have what they secretly really want: some time for themselves.”
There is no wrong way to celebrate Mom this Sunday. From flowers to an at home movie day to simple quality time, we wish all the Mothers out there a love-filled holiday.
